Iowa City Police: Woman Arrested for Bringing Marijuana Bags into Jail

The woman was charged with a felony for bringing the drugs into the jail despite being warned to reveal them beforehand.

An Iowa City woman was charged with a felony after allegedly bringing several baggies of marijuana into the Johnson County Jail upon her arrest for another crime.

According to an Iowa City Police complaint, Evelyn Maribel Chinchilla, 22, of Iowa City was being booked in the Johnson County Jail for a separate offense on Jan. 19 at 8:20 p.m.

Police say Chinchilla was warned to reveal any illegal contraband on her person several times before arriving at the jail, but she did not do so. Upon being searched while inside the jail she was found with 14 prepackaged baggies of marijuana, for a total weight of 12.93 grams of the drug.

Chinchilla was charged with possessing illegal contraband in a correctional facility, a Class D felony. She is currently in the Johnson County Jail on a $3,000 bond for possession of a controlled substance. An additional amount for the felony has yet to be added to her bond amount, according to the complaint.

hahahah only 12 grams ??? pre packaged??? You can't get any more small time than that !!! Here in Calif, or Colo. or Washington State, that would be considered a 'free sample" ahahahah what a waste of government tax dollars. Let her go, it was only cannabis, which is harmless and cannot kill you with overdose, not that 12 grams could do much anyways!!! Aspirine in the jail is alot more dangerous !!!

Some good points. Although I'm not sure if the amount of the drug really makes a difference in this case.

On Feb. 17, 2010, after reviewing testimony from four public hearings and reading through more than 10,000 pages of submitted material, members of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy unanimously voted to recommend that the Iowa legislature remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Iowa Controlled Substances Act. I think the young lady was not thinking clearly when she did this...or, it was her first rodeo. Other than that 'indicretion'... The closest I have ever seen marijuana come to harming anyone was during an air drop. We brought in 1100 pounds from Jamaica and dropped it in a peanut field in middle Georgia. The bales were dropped from a small plane at 125 feet altitude. One of the bales, about 80 pounds, missed my compadre by only a few feet... but it surely messed up his truck. You can read about it in: Shoulda Robbed a Bank That is my contribution to helping point out just how ludicrous our pot laws truly are.
