Car Slams Into St. Charles Fire Engine

Fire Engine was responding to emergency when it was struck by car on I-70.

A 42-year-old O'Fallon man was seriously injured early Wednesday morning after his car slammed into the rear of a St. Charles Fire Engine under First Capitol Drive overpass on westbound Interstate 70.

The city fire engine was parked under the overpass with lights flashing, responding to another emergency, Capt. Dan Casey with the St. Charles Fire Department said in a press release.

David Andrzejewski was driving the 1999 Chevrolet Lumina which hit the Fire Engine, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report

Firefighters had to cut into the Fire Engine to access the equipment needed to rescue Andrzejewski, who was trapped in his vehicle. He was then transported to St. John's Mercy Medical Center for treatment. None of the firefighters were injured.

The fire engine sustained almost $300,000 in damages, said Casey. The department will use a reserve truck until the damaged engine can be repaired or replaced, he said in the press release.
