Get Your Roof Reindeer Ready for Winter Weather

The fall season is the perfect time to get ready for winter, both inside and outside your home or business.  John Beal Roofing, the locally-owned, award-winning roofing service, with three generations of St. Louis roofers, emphasizes the importance of a roof that will protect you and your belongings during winter’s rain, ice and snow.

The Roofing Professionals offer these important tips to prepare for winter weather:

·         Before the weather turns, trim back overgrown vegetation.

  • Clean all debris off the roof and inside gutters and hose down. If the gutters are clogged, spray water inside them to clear. Be careful, as the hose could jam from suction if placed inside the drain.

·         Remove deteriorated caulking and roofing cement and reapply.  Make sure the sealant around any skylights and HVAC systems is secure. Periodically, sealant needs to be reinforced or replaced.

·         Check for loose shingles and apply roofing cement to secure. Check for missing shingles. When a shingle or tile is missing, the bare-bones of your roof are exposed and vulnerable.

  • Check metal areas for warps and holes. Secure it to siding or other surface and reapply roofing cement.

·         Check for cracks.  St. Louis winters typically bring repeated cycles of freezing and melting, which stress your roof system and can cause cracks. Your roof may have cracks from last year’s winter.

·         Eliminate any standing water and determine its source.  If water is sitting anywhere on your roof, there is a problem that may need correcting before you see evidence in your home or business.

·         Request a free inspection. Recognizing that it’s hard to assess your roof at ground-level and not advisable for homeowners to be crawling on the roof, do not hesitate to call a roofing professional.

“We cannot predict what kind of winter we will have, but it’s best to prepare the roof over your home or business for whatever weather comes our way,” said John Beal Roofing owner, John Beal. “If a problem is left untreated, it will only get worse.”

Make it a roof that even the reindeer will appreciate!
