Obituary: Community Volunteer Frank Martinez Dies

Martinez believed the strength of a community lies in volunteerism, friends say.

Frank Martinez was the very definition of the word "community connector."

The longtime volunteer and St. Peters resident died on Feb. 25. He was 83.

Martinez was a huge advocate for children, said Mary Hutchison, director of the  Community Council of St. Charles County. He volunteered with a large number of groups including the , St. Charles Foster/Adopt Association and served as chairperson for the Missouri Trust Fund.

He contributed to through gifts of funding and time. Hutchison wrote a volunteer spotlight about Martinez in January 2008 that pointed out Martinez often said that the strength of a community lies in volunteersim.

Hutchison said every time she would see Martinez, he brought news of other organizations throughout the community.

"He was always connecting and advocating," Hutchinson said. "He really taught me what community is all about."

"He walked the talk," she said.
