Surviving the Heat

We all know St. Louis summers can be unbearably hot. Is hot even the right word? Try steamy and thick, like a sauna heaped with hot coals. And, unfortunately, elderly people are at a much greater risk for suffering from a heat-related illness than younger people. Here are a few tips to protect yourself this summer:

·If possible, seek an air-conditioned environment or go to a cooling shelter..

·Wear lightweight clothing.

·Do not engage in strenuous activities during heat advisory days.

·Always wear sun block when going outside, even if for a short period of time. Apply sunscreen one-half hour before heading outdoors and re-apply.

·Be sure there is someone to check on elderly friends and neighbors.
