Miss Amazing Missouri Pageant

The Miss Amazing Missouri pageant was held at Lindenwood University Saturday night. Miss Amazing is a program for disabled young women aimed at building their confidence.

Amazing Night

On Saturday night, I volunteered at the Miss Amazing Missouri Pageant. The Miss Amazing pageant is a program for disabled young women aimed at building their confidence in a stage setting.

The Miss Amazing program was founded in 2007, but this is the first year that Missouri is having a pageant. Lindenwood University student Ellie Lorenzen fell in love with the program in her home state of Nebraska and was inspired to bring the pageant to Missouri.

Ellie spent months preparing for the pageant. She recruited volunteers, raised funds, and gathered support. Her work paid off and Saturday night went great.

Almost forty young women competed in six age divisions for the titles of Miss Missouri Amazing. They competed in interview, on state introduction, and evening wear. There also was an optional talent showcase offered to the women. At the end of the pageant, every contestant was crowned a princess of Missouri and one young lady from each age division was crowned queen.

There was also a "rising stars" division that allowed for younger girls, who are not quite old enough to be in the pageant, to have stage time. These girls wore their pretty dresses and received a crown and trophy.

At the begining of the pageant day each contestant was paired with a buddy who would mentor them throughout the day. Many of these buddies where former pageant contestants themselves. I served as a buddy to Allie Nichols along with my friend Brittany Fellows. We had such a great day with Allie and she did a beautiful job.

There where male Lindenwood students who volunteered to be escorts for the young ladies. The guys walked with the contestants during the evening gown phase of competition and presented each contestant with a rose. Needless to say, the escorts might have been the biggest hit of the night.

I emceed the pageant along with my fellow LU broadcast student, Brett McMillian. We had a great time and thought that all of the contestants did great!
