Lindenwood University President Evans Announces Retirement

Lindenwood University President James D. Evans, PhD, has announced his retirement effective May 31, 2015.

Evans, 67, said the early notice provides the board of directors ample time to conduct a thorough mission-based search for the next president. Lindenwood University Board Chair Jim J. Shoemake said he had appointed a search committee, which was moving forward in a diligent and systematic manner.

“Dr. Evans is to be commended and praised for his lifelong dedication to Lindenwood, its students, faculty, and staff,’ said Shoemake. “He will be forever remembered and revered by the entire Lindenwood community and others.”

Evans assumed his current role in 2006, but he has been a part of the Lindenwood community for 40 years. He was hired as an assistant professor of psychology in 1974, and advanced to the rank of professor in 1985. He was named dean of social sciences in 1994, dean of sciences in 1995, and dean of faculty in 1996. He was elevated to the post of provost in 2000.

Lindenwood has made great strides during the Evans administration, including the recruitment of top notch faculty and the seamless transition of the St. Charles campus to NCAA Division II membership. He was integral in ushering in Lindenwood’s first doctoral program, a doctor of education degree, and he was the driving force behind the creation of a day college in Belleville, IL.

Evans spearheaded the acquisition of the former Barat Academy building to create a Lindenwood University School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences in Dardenne Prairie, MO. He also brokered a partnership with St. Charles Community College to share space at the Nursing School.

Since becoming president, Evans has articulated a mission-based vision for Lindenwood – with focus on students, strong academic programs, and cutting edge technology. He has placed an increased emphasis on student development and open and clear communication with the University’s constituencies.

There have also been many physical plant improvements under Evans’ leadership. He has overseen the construction of new residence halls, a new student center, and a major renovation to Harmon Hall. In addition, two extension campuses, Wildwood and Downtown St. Louis, have been added. And as a part of the institution’s transition to NCAA Division II, he oversaw the construction of Lindenwood’s new Student-Athlete Center.
