The Commuter Nightmare: How Bad Is It for St. Charles Commuters?

If you're in St. Charles city, you've probably got one of the easiest commutes in the county.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the average commute for American drivers is between 25 and 26 minutes. If you're from St. Charles, your average commute comes in well under that.

That's according to Slate, which says it takes St. Charles drivers in the 63301 area code an average of 21.3 minutes to get to work. Drivers from the 63303 area code are just slightly over that at 22 minutes.

A map on the Slate allows readers to enter a zip code and find out the average commute from their area.

St. Charles County's averages may be affected by the lack of a public transit system, since commutes by public transit are generally longer.

City Average Commute Time Wentzville - 63385
29.7 minutes Lake Saint Louis - 63367
27.6 minutes O'Fallon - 63366 25.4 minutes O'Fallon - 63368 27.1 minutes St. Peters - 63376
24.3 minutes St. Charles - 63301
21.3 minutes St. Charles - 63303 22 minutes

In May 2011, Slate published a story called "Your Commute is Killing You," which revealed the following facts, gleaned from university studies and scientific research:

  • Divorce is 40 percent more likely when one partner has a daily commute of more than 45 minutes
  • Long-distance commuters suffer "disproportionate pain, stress, obesity, and dissatisfaction"
  • The length of a commute to work affects people more than the length of the work day itself

How long is your daily commute?

There's are many commercial corridors in the St. Charles street grid that are ripe for higher density, higher value commercial redevelopment. A rethought, redeveloped First Capitol and Fifth Street alone, with continuous three to five story development along the existing 20 ft setback (as opposed to the sparse, single story, parking-heavy junk that predominates right now) could support a very high number of firms and employees, and in the process help St. Charles to attract a high quality professional demographic to the city limits. The area bounded by Droste, Clay, and Duchesne is just waiting for someone with vision and cash to transform it from the derelicted wasteland it is today into a vibrant business district. This would eliminate the need for many commutes altogether.

Yeah, it saddened us when we realized that someone had discretely made a generous item donation butRead More had left their wallet in the donated gym bag. Our social media director Dawn Thomas was able to locate the teen and "Renew that Treasure " to it's owner. It gave us all such joy!
