Survey Finds Eleven Historically Significant Buildings

Owners could apply to have them added to National Register of Historic Places.

A survey of the Commons and Midtown areas of St. Charles found these buildings could be individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

  • 302 Jefferson Street, constructed in 1895
  • 556 Jefferson Street, constructed before 1869
  • , constructed 1838
  • 566 First Capitol Drive, constructed in 1908-1909
  • 571 First Capitol Drive, constructed in 1860
  • 519 First Capitol Drive, constructed before 1869
  • , constructed 1947-1948
  • 409 Clark Street, constructed 1889
  • 100 North Third Street, constructed 1903
  • , constructed 1890 ca.
  • 125 North Fifth Street, constructed 1890 ca.

The survey looked at 160 structures in the Commons and Midtown areas. A historic designation of the area by the federal government would allow residents and businesses to apply for certain tax credits that would help defray the costs of renovations to their property. The credits are meant to encourage owners to invest in construction materials that maintain the historic integrity of their building, which frequently cost more than more modern options.

Karen Bode Baxter, a preservation consultant hired by the city, said the designation would not restrict a resident’s property rights.
