Around Town: Businesses Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

Around Town is a round up of news and notes from St. Charles.

  • October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Local groups have organized a number of activities to raise money and awareness, including I Am What I Am and other businesses on Main Street. The businesses hosted a progressive pink party, during which people were able to stop by several shops and restaurants for drink specials, make up and hair extensions.
  • New Town businesses are displaying pink to promote breast cancer screening and research. Business owners are offering a number of ways that people can donate to the St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in memory of New Town resident Lisa Brewer. A event is cheduled for 5-8 p.m. Oct. 15.
    • will have cosmopolitan martinis and cupcakes.
    • Rogue Fitness will have pink henna tattoos.
    • will have flavored lattes and live music.
    • The Second-Hand Rose will offer a 10 percent discount on anything except fresh flowers to people wearing pink during the event.
    • will have pink feature and pink silk hair extensions.
    • will have pink pet bandanas and bows.
    • will have a pink dinosaur donation bank, pink lemonade and pink sugar cookies.
    • will have pink Farmer's Insurance mugs.
    • will have a massage therapist available.
    • Mary Kay Cosmetics will donate 15 percent of sales Oct. 15. 
  • Next Tuesday, local experts will meet to discuss the heroin deaths that have risen 300 percent in the past 5 years. The Community Services Summit will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 18 and will feature Mary Case, chief medical examiner, Matt Bargen, St. Charles County Regional Drug Task Force and Paul Cary, University of Missouri Health Care. The event will be at Harvester Christian Church, 2950 Kings Crossing in St. Charles.
