“Whiteside for 3!” was announced for the 142nd time in a 73-48 St. Charles High win over Christian High School on Thursday night’s Varsity Boys Basketball contest held at St. Charles High.
Corey Whiteside made his record breaking jumper four minutes into the contest and was awarded the game ball at the preceding deadball. Corey has been seeing regular Varsity time since mid-way through the season his freshman year of basketball.
Whiteside’s 142nd three pointer eclipses the previous record of 141 held by Charles Williams, a 2001 graduate of SCHS.
Speaking with Corey few days after the game on his thoughts on breaking the record, “It felt pretty cool, it makes you feel accomplished … like you have something to leave behind.”
Entering into the 2012-13 season you needed only 10 three pointers to break the record, what has that been like?
“It was like something hovering over you, I was anxious to get it over.”
Student support of Corey’s shooting prowess has been great ever since the first chants of “He’s a Freshman” rang out in his first Varsity game as a 9th grader.
On the wall there was a student made poster The Corey Countdown, counting down the 3s needed for the record, what was that like playing with the reminder of the record? “It was pressure, but positive pressure…support really.
I know they wanted me to get the record.” Looking back at the shot, when you let it go did you know it was in and what did it feel like when it did go in? “When I let it go it felt good…I knew it was going in. When it went in my shoulders dropped it was like a weight being lifted off.”
Now that you own the record does it change how you will play the rest of the season?
“It will definitely let me relax and play my game. As part of a team everyone has a role to play, I will be able focus and play even harder in that role – if that makes sense. It puts the focus on team success where it needs to be.”
