Mount Pleasant Estates Tawny Port

My favorite wine pairing of all time is Tawny Port with vanilla ice cream and peaches—a perfect dish for a hot summer day. And, good news! We recently released a new batch of Tawny Port—less than 3,000 bottles are available.

How We Make Port:

During our initial plantings, we had wonderful success with one particular grapevine, which we named after our founders, Muench. However, the wine tasted terrible.  After several vintages of bad wine, we made a port from it. It too, tasted awful after a year.

The first batch of bad wine was never thrown out. We just forgot to throw it away. Four years later, the product was still aging in the cellar. Curiosity got the best of us and we tasted the aged wine. What a difference! Now this is something we could build on.

After several refinements, that same aged port was used as a starter to create what is now known as Mount Pleasant’s Master Tawny Port. We first bottled the port in 1998. And now, we begin with the master port to make today’s port, which ages in oak barrels. The Tawny Port is loaded with flavors of butterscotch, caramel and toffee. Due to the slow aging process, we can only bottle port every few years. Prior to this year, we bottled Tawny Port in 2010.
