More than Bike Shop Wanted on Main Street St. Charles

Momentum Cycles left in December; building owner seeks another bike shop.

Momentum Cycles rolled off Main Street in December, leaving the historic downtown area without a bicycle shop, at least temporarily.

Penny Pitman, president of Iron Star Inc., which owns the building, said there has been a bicycle shop at 104 South Main St. for the past 15 to 20 years. Before Momentum Cycles, The Touring Cyclist operated there.

Those businesses have other stores—Momentum has a St. Peters location and The Touring Cyclist operates in Bridgeton.

The next business doesn’t have to be a bike shop, but Pitman said she wants something that adds something different to Main Street's offerings.

“I’d like to have something that contributes to the neighborhood and adds something that’s not offered by other businesses,” Pitman said. “I would like to have a bicycle shop, but I’d like one with a little more social emphasis.”

For example, she would like the bike shop also to be a café, sandwich shop or offer picnic lunches for its clients, she said.

“It seems like they would have a built-in audience,” Pitman said.

There are several bike shops in St. Charles County that rent bikes and offer food and beverages, including the 2nd Street Bike Shop Café in St. Charles’ Frenchtown.

She said there have been several inquiries about the open space and hopes to have it filled by spring.
