Main Street books is one of several local bookstores participating in the "Where's Waldo?" hunt, which is sponsored by Candlewick Press.

Erwin said this is the first time she's partnered with local businesses in St. Charles on a project. "It's a way to say shop local," she said, adding that her store relies on the success of the entire Main Street area.

Erwin said business is up .

"I think it made people realize the precarious state of things," she said. "If something as big as Borders can close, how easy is it for (local shops) to just fold in on themselves."

Main Street Books is one of just a handful of independent bookstores in St. Louis. Sue's News, which is located in the Galleria, is closing this month.

Participating stores include:

Old Towne Spice Shop
