Italian Ice Stand to Open on Fifth Street

Jaynie's Ice Box serves Italian ice, which is whipped ice and flavoring.

An Italian ice stand is expected to open on North Fifth Street this summer,

Jayne Norris, owner of Jaynie's Ice Box, hopes to set up her Italian ice cart on the parking lot of Ermeling Truck Repair at 517 North Fifth Street, the location of a former produce stand.

Jaynie's Ice Box is expected to be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., May 1 to Sept. 30. They will have a small shack and a few picnic tables at the location. Prices range from $2 for a 2 ounce serving to $5 for a 5 ounce serving.

Italian ice is different than snow cones in that the ice and flavors are "whipped" together. It contains no diary or high fructose corn syrup, Norris said in her application for a permit to set up the business.

Norris and her partner, William Hampton, have sold Italian ice at various festivals and fairs in the past year.

"While we realized that we're not too old to run this business and do real well at it, we a probably too old to be moving the carts around and going to different events all the time," Hampton said at the Planning and Zoning building. "Having a fixed location... it'd be a great base location for this next year."

The business still needs approval for a conditional use permit for the business from the St. Charles City Council.
