Firehouse Subs Opens in St. Charles

Second St. Charles location is planned for University Commons.

A Firehouse Subs restaurant opened in St. Charles in early September and franchisee Larry Webb says he is hoping to build another restaurant at the University Commons development across from Lindenwood University.

There are seven Firehouse Subs currently in the St. Louis region, with locations in O'Fallon, St. Charles, Chesterfield, Ballwin, Fairview Heights, Granite City and Hampton Village. A total of 52 new restaurants are planned for the greater St. Louis region.

Webb also is planning to add locations at Boone's Crossing in Chesterfield, on Jungermann Road in St. Peters and in Lake Saint Louis.

"I like fast casual," he said. "The ambiance is a little bit more upscale with the promise of delivering higher quality food and a better eating environment."

Webb worked for McDonalds as a manager as a college student, then joined the army. He served 20 years in the military, then returned to St. Louis and got a job working at Bass Pro. But his experience at McDonalds stuck with him and he searched for the right fast casual restaurant. He liked Firehouse Subs, a restaurant started by two firefighters in 1994, which has more than 670 locations in 36 states today.

The St. Charles location features a mural depicting Lewis and Clark greeting fire fighters on the Missouri River. Mark Twain appears the clouds overlooking the scene, as the restaurant is located in Mark Twain Village at 1365 Bass Pro Drive.

The restaurant is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Correction: An earlier version of this article listed the incorrect city for a future Firehouse Subs and the number of restaurant locations. Patch regrets the error.
