Police: Woman Charged with Stealing After Swiping Wallet at Walmart

Tracy Mechelle Jennings, 43, of St. Peters has been charged with felony stealing.

One day after asking for help identifying a woman caught on a security camera at the St. Charles Walmart, police have made an arrest.

According to a release from the the St. Charles Police Department, the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s office has charged Tracy Mechelle Jennings, 43, of the 700 block of Queens Court Place in St. Peters, with Felony Stealing for an incident that occurred on Friday. Bond has been set at $25,000 cash. 

According to police, at around 6:30 p.m. on June 28 an 83-year-old was shopping at the Walmart located at 2897 Veteran’s Memorial Parkway. The 83-year-old told police she was shopping when she was approached by a Jennings and an unnamed male. 

Police said Jennings told the victim that she was hired to help people locate the items they wish to purchase. The victim allowed Jennings to assist her with shopping. Jennings told the man to go wait in the car and listen to music and he left.  

The victim and Jennings then shopped and went to checkout. The 83-year-old paid for her items and police said Jennings told the woman she help her load the bags into her car. 

Police said Jennings helped load the grocery bags into the victim’s car. When the victim went to get a can of beans to give Jennings as thank you, Jennings was gone. 

Police said the victim then checked her purse and noticed her wallet, with several hundred dollars of cash, her license and personal papers, was gone. Police said security footage which showed Jennings taking the wallet out of the purse. 

Jennings then left in a vehicle with the male. At this time the male was identified as not being involved in the theft.
