New Town To Celebrate Independence Day

If you're looking for a way to celebrate Independence Day but don't want to get caught up in the crowds of Riverfest, Fair St. Louis or the Heritage and Freedom Fest, there is another smaller, equally patriotic option available at The New Town at St. Charles.

The community located near Highway 370 and Elm Street has a trio of events planned for July 4: a parade in the morning, a carnival in the afternoon and a concert in the evening. There will be no fireworks, but the music ends at 8 p.m., which gives you plenty of time to catch the explosive conclusion at .

The parade begins at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to run to 11:30 a.m. "This is the sixth year for the parade," said Lisa Galati, events coordinator for New Town. "We'll have floats, Cub Scouts, classic cars. There will be dogs, cats and other animals in the parade."

The parade route covers 10 streets in the community, beginning at West Greensmith then heading down Millington, Granger, Barter, Hempstead, Galt House, Rue Royale, Arpent, Canal and New Town Avenue then ending at the Town Hall. A prize will be given for the best float.

After the parade, the carnival will start up and run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival is sponsored by the in New Town. A $5 fee will get visitors a wristband for unlimited rides.

"There will be rides and different games," Galati said. "There is a small train that kids can ride."

At 6 p.m. local band Double D will take the stage at the amphitheater and play until 8 p.m. Double D's members live in New Town and play regularly at the .

"They play a variety of music--rock 'n' roll, pop," Galati said. "They have a pretty good following. They're a great band."

The concert is free, and visitors should bring blankets or lawn chairs. Food will be available for purchase at local businesses by the amphitheater.
