St. Charles County Commemorates Sept. 11 Through Events, Service

This week there are many ways to remember Sept. 11.

Local cities, organizations and churches will be holding events this week to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and to commemorate the lives of those that died in the terrorist attacks.

Patch brings you a look at the events happening this week in the St. Charles County area. The events are listed by city and time.

St. Charles

  • Author and will speak at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 in the Anheuser-Busch Leadership Room in the Spellman Center at Greitens will talk about U.S. Special Forces and Bin Laden. 
  • Volunteers are needed for a service project in honor of Sept. 11 at Emmaus Homes. Volunteers would meet at 6 p.m. Friday and help adults with developmental disabilities place miniature flags near mailboxes, make greeting cards and talk about patriotism.Click here to register. 
  • Volunteers are needed to help with at in St. Charles on Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. Volunteers will assist in running a parade and also will help the children with age appropriate activites such as coloring and activity sheets. Click here to register. 
  • Volunteers are needed to collect funds for Backstoppers at the of St. Charles, 12 p.m. Sept. 10. The Boys and Girls Clubs will observe a moment of silence at each football game and volunteers will collect donations to help Backstoppers. Click here to register.
  • Volunteers are needed to help clean at a transitional living group home for homeless and runaway youth in St. Charles at 10 a.m. Sept. 10. Click here to register.
  • Lindenwood University and the United Way of Greater St. Louis will collect non perishable foods during the first home game for Lindenwood's football team Sept. 10. During half time an honor gaurd will conduct a moment of silence and recognize military and first responders. The game starts at 6 p.m.
  • Harvester Christian Church will hold a memorial service at the . The event will be held at 10:28 a.m. Sunday. This is a community event — no tickets needed. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. with a free concert and the service at 10:28 a.m. 
  • and will host a mass for grandparents of children who attend the school. Following the mass, the Royal Impressions and Duchesne Jazz Band will perform Big Band American Pride. Mass starts at at 8:15 a.m. Sept. 11 with the performance to follow at 9:15 a.m.
  • will host a prayer service on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.

Wentzville

  • The Crossings Church will hold a 'Heroes Among Us' rememberance service at 11 a.m. Sunday, at 115 May Road (behind ). There will be a barbecue cookoff following the service.
  • The , and the American Legion have collaborated with the city of Wentzville to mark the 10 year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. Sunday with a presentation of the colors and a procession of emergency and military personnel. The ceremony will include performances from band, ringing of the bells, a 21-gun salute and special recognition of emergency personnel who lost their lives trying to save others during the terrorist attacks.

Lake Saint Louis

  • Lake Saint Louis will observe the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks against America with a memorial ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at Lake Saint Louis .

"Jesus Painter" Deanna Robeson will paint a 9/11 World Trade Center commemorative painting during Dardenne's 11 a.m. worship service.

Dardenne Prairie

  • "Jesus Painter" Deanna Robeson will paint a 9/11 World Trade Center commemorative painting during Dardenne's 11 a.m. worship service. Robeson will have approximately 60 minutes to begin and complete the commemorative piece. O'Fallon

  • in Wentzville's 4th Degree Assembly will hold a Knights of Columbus Patriot’s Day 5K walk/run and one mile fun run. The event begins at 8 a.m. at . The event will raise money for Backstoppers and the Wounded Warrior Project. 
  • Stop and Remember — At 12 p.m., all residents are asked to join in a national moment of remembrance by ceasing all regular activity for one minute and, as bells ring and sirens sound, reflect on the lives lost and those affected by the tragedies of 9-11.
  • Patriot Day Blood Drive — 12:30-3:30 p.m., . Walk-ins are welcome.
  • Patriot Day Ceremony — "A Tribute to First Responders," 1:30 p.m. at the O'Fallon 9-11 First Responders Memorial behind City Hall. The program features guest speaker Dawn Robinson, who survived the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. The ceremony will include the sounding of sirens, followed by a moment of silence, an invitation to the public to place flowers at the memorial, and remarks by O’Fallon’s Mayor Bill Hennessy, O’Fallon Police Chief Roy Joachimstaler, O’Fallon Fire Protection District Chief Michael J. Ballmann and St. Charles County Ambulance District Chief Ken Koch.
