Public Input Sought for 110-Acre Riverfront Park

St. Charles City Parks Department is hosting several community planning sessions.

St. Charles residents are invited to a community planning session for the 110-acre park in north St. Charles.

The property, which is located north of Boeing Co. and between Highway 94 North, Hawning Road and the River Road, was donated to the city in 2000. Earlier this year the Parks Department began the process of developing a master plan for the site.

The planning session is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 15 at in the Orchard Farm School District.

for the park, will explain the site and some of the constraints for development. The group will also review a range of uses for the park.

People who are in attendance will be able to share their thoughts and objectives for the park.

Some residents have suggested athletic fields, a Frisbee or disc golf course, or a BMX dirt track. Another possibility could be a festival area.

suggested everything from urban bike trails to golf courses.

"Nearly every kid has a bike, and they all need to be outside more in a safe place out of traffic," wrote Cameron Brown.

Dawn Blackburn commented that she'd like to see the park turn into a Children's Living History Farm. Benjamin Eli wrote that he'd like to see the site considered for the city's Community Center.

Two more workshops are planned for later this year. A final session will solicit opinions on a draft park master plan.

I'd like to see a fully-accessible playground for all kids, especially those with special needs or disabilities (similar to Zachary's playground). St. Charles has a lot of children with cochlear implants, autism, and other disabilities, it would be nice for them to have a place to play without having to drive to Wentzville or Lake St. Louis. The bike park sounds like a great idea or maybe a splash pad, like Kirkwood park.

Isn't this area in the flood zone?

Check out the fully accessible playground that is going to be built in Jaycee Park. We are working with the group that developed Zachary's playground. http://www.stcharlesparks.com/270/facilities/jaycee-park-accessible-playground.php Also the 110 acre park is located in the floodway of the river. That is one of the constaints on that area.

I love the idea of a park for kids with special needs or disabilities.

Here's a link to the stories we've done about the fully accessible playground already in the works at Jaycee Park. http://stcharles.patch.com/topics/Jaycee+Park
