Kids, Adults Take A Break for Art

Foundry Art Centre hosts event to give people a chance to try making different types of art.

Art isn't something that Diane Ewing or Jacquie Thompson do everyday. But the pair of friends drove from Foristell and Silex to St. Charles Friday to participate in Art Break Day, a day dedicating to taking time for art.

The Foundry Art Centre was one of 19 locations, which included Burkina Faso, West Africa and Tamil Nadu, India, to host an Art Break event Sept. 6.

About 500 people were expected to attend the event in St. Charles, including 100 third grade students on a field trip.

Ewing and Thompson were among the adults who decided to pause for art.

"We both like doing artsy things," Ewing said. "It just sounded like a great thing to do."

Jessica May, program manager for the Foundry Art Centre, said often day-to-day worries and work demands stop adults from having the time to create art.

"I think people still appreciate it," she said. "And then of course when they're retired they can finally get back into it. That's what I hear all the time, they're like, 'Finally I have the time to do the art I wanted to do.'"
