Missouri State Archives Traveling Civil War Exhibit to Stop at Lindenwood
Opening Event planned for Sunday, November 4
Lindenwood University’s Spellmann Center will house an exhibit by the Missouri State Archives commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, starting with an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.
The exhibit, called Divided Loyalties: Civil War Documents from the Missouri State Archives, examines the upheaval and uncertainty that characterized Missouri during the Civil War era. Drawing on more than 9 million pages of Civil War-related documents and court cases, the exhibit goes beyond the stories of battles and military strategy to consider the charged atmosphere of social conflict that permeated the state and affected soldier and civilian alike.
The opening ceremony begins with remarks by Lindenwood President James D. Evans, PhD, and includes talks by Lindenwood history and anthropology faculty on various aspects of the Civil War in the region, as well as a presentation by St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann on the Civil War in St. Charles County.
Ehlmann is a noted historian and author who recently published a comprehensive book, Crossroads: A History of St. Charles County, Missouri, through Lindenwood University Press. Copies will be available for sale and signing by the author. The event will also be marked by performances of Civil War-era music by Voices Only, Lindenwood’s premiere acapella vocal group.
The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display through the end of the fall semester in mid-December. For more information, contact Lindenwood Archivist Paul Huffman at 636-949-4823.
