About this column:

St. Charles Patch will visit St. Charles Humane Society or the St. Charles Animal Shelter to snap pictures of adoptable pets each week.
Susie is a sweet shepherd mix that was tied to the Five Acres Animal Shelter gate in a hail storm. They brought her in and gave her a second chance. This sweet girl is still waiting to find her forever home. Susie would make a great family dogs and likes kids. She is 6 years old, does well with other dogs and is potty trained. She likes going for walks and will sit for a treat. Five Acres Animal Shelter is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located in St. Charles. Our mission is to end pet homelessness, promote responsible pet ownership and advocate for animal welfare. We are the only no kill …
Dollar is a 3-year-old pit shepherd mix. He is so sweet and loving and would do great in a home with kids. Dollar is potty trained and has good manners. He got his name because he was so hungry when a volunteer found him that he ate dollar rolls meant for the geese. He would do best as an only pet and needs a fenced in yard. He enjoys running in the yard and going for walks. Come meet him Tuesday – Friday 2-6 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday noon-6 p.m. Five Acres Animal Shelter is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located in St. Charles. Kelly is a 1 1/2 year old female boxer and weighs about 48 lbs.  Kelly is deaf, has one blue eye and a happy disposition. Kelly is a little skittish at first but once she knows you she is a very affectionate girl.  She gets along well with other dogs and loves to play with them and any of her toys. Kelly will need a home where someone can take her to a trainer to help her learn sign language so that she can communicate better. She will definitely need a home with a fenced in yard for her safety because of her disability.  Cole is a five-year-old male german shepherd that weighs 50 pounds. …
April April is a 2-year-old, 45-pound American Pit Bull Terrier Mix, picked up by animal control in a very rural area. April literally had no time left when Heartland came to visit her and, had they left the shelter without her, she would have been euthanized immediate afterwards. April has the typical energy of dogs of her type, so needs plenty of exercise. She will reward you for walks or playtime by showing you her tricks. She knows “sit,” “down,” “shake’” and “stay.” April is selective about other dogs as friends, so would be happy as an only dog in a cat-free household, although a …
Lil’ Orphan Annie: This kitty was rescued as a tiny baby and bottle fed as she was (obviously) an orphan! What makes her a bit different is a challenge with perfect gait while walking.  Annie marches with her back legs but walks perfectly with her front.  She plays with her kitty friends and chases, and jumps through kitty toys just fine, but is slow in her walking and very careful when climbing in and out of the litter box.  It is as if in running her brain forgets there is a problem, in walking it is quite obvious something is not perfectly connected there.  Annie has shared a room with two…
Five Acres Animal Shelter: Diva is a gorgeous 10 year old female who is looking for a nice quiet home to call her own. She enjoys napping in a comfy bed and bird watching from the windows. She is often overlooked at the shelter since she is somewhat older than most of the cats. She hopes the Easter Bunny brings me a home to call her own! She will make a great companion for a busy person that would like companionship, but won’t require constant attention. She'll nap when you’re away and greet you when you come home! Five Acres Animal Shelter is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located in St. …
Five Acres Animal Shelter: Baby is about a 4-year-old gray and white tuxedo cat. Her owner has a life threatening illness and she had to seek help with rehoming Baby. The shelter was able to help this woman with a very hard decision. In the process of doing a blood test they found Baby was FIV positive. She is an adorable loving cat that needs a quiet home to call her own again. Baby has the biggest purr motor when you pet her. If you can help Baby by giving her the kind of loving home she is so deserving of, stop by the shelter to meet her.  Five Acres Animal Shelter is a 501c3 nonprofit …
Ranger is being offered for adoption by the Heartland Humane Society of Missouri. Ranger is a handsome, approximately two-year-old Coonhound that weighs about 65 lbs. Ranger is such a hound—he has that wonderful hound-dog bark with a friendly wagging tail and disposition to match. Ranger is very friendly, loves people and likes to lean into you as he enjoys being petted and rubbed.  Once you start petting he will freeze in place soyou continue. He enjoys exploring the world with that hound nose so would do best with a fenced yard to keep him safely at home. Ranger would be a wonderful family …
Staff members at the St. Charles Animal Shelter are desperate to try to find a home for Zeus, an 8-month-old black shepherd/lab mix. He was featured two weeks ago in the Adopt Me column. The other animals featured that week were adopted, but Zeus is still looking for a home.  Zeus has been at the shelter since mid-October. Although he goes for walks with volunteers, it's not good for him to be caged up so much, said Animal Control Officer Cindy Saeuberlich. Zeus is very sweet and friendly, she said. At 50 lbs, he is housebroken and good with kids. The St. Charles Animal Control will be …
A dog who was rescued by the St. Charles Humane Society from a puppy mill in Hannibal, MO is one of several available for adoption now.  Carlos is a 10-year-old black Pomeranian who will need an owner who can provide lots of loving care, said Brenda Carabajal, canine coordinator for the St. Charles Humane Society.  He needs to learn to use the bathroom outdoors, and will have to have a special diet of soft food because he no longer has his bottom teeth, she said  In addition, Carlos may need pain medication because he has bad knees. He only weighs 4 or 5 pounds.  This December, the St. …
Santa will be stationed at St. Charles Animal Control from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for the annual holiday adoption event.  Last year, 13 animals were adopted during the holiday event, though more than 50 people came through to look at the pets, said Animal Control Officer Cindy Saeuberlich.  The animal shelter has a variety of dogs and cats available. Saeuberlich said she recommends people not give an actual pet as a gift for the holidays unless it's a family gift. Sometimes people want to pick out a new kitten for Aunt Linda, but that's not a good idea, she said.  "What if they don't mix…
