Freedom to Defend

I find it upsetting that the Democratic party has a strict stance on the “right to choose” when dealing with unwanted pregnancies, but they forget all about the right to defend oneself. Although I have many friends who are socially and politically left but still oppose gun control, the Democratic platform and the elected officials’ voting trends favor abortion as well as gun control.

Defense goes beyond a right. It is instinctual to every human being, whether you are gestating in the womb or driving to work. Gun control is not about regulating violence, it is about regulating firearms, and therefore stripping law-abiding citizens the right to effectively defend ourselves. Although that in itself is a gross injustice, I find the contradictory logic behind the Democratic party platform on the topics of abortion and gun control disgusting.

The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) promises to “unequivocally uphold Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion.” Also, although the DNCC says they support the individual’s right to own firearms, they also support regulation, laws, and assault rifle bans. Reading that may give people the warm fuzzies, but these regulations and laws are only tools to make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to own firearms. The only problem is that regulations, laws, and bans are broken every day. Criminals, who incite violence and other mischievous behavior, break laws.

In an ideal world for a textbook liberal, there would be a ban on guns and an open door to the nearest abortion clinic. Some people argue that abortion should be circumstantial. One of the main circumstances people speak of is rape.

So here I am, a law-abiding citizen, living in the ideal liberal world. I’m lying in bed sound asleep, having a nightmare about property tax or a dream about that time in history when America was the land of the free. Since I respect laws, I am unarmed. Maybe they are banned completely, or maybe the regulations are so strict that it is entirely too expensive to own a firearm. Maybe ammunition is impossible to find. Either way, I’m disarmed, asleep in my bed. A criminal, who does not respect the law, breaks the law by breaking into my home. Since they do not abide by the law, they are also armed. Now, said criminal barges into my bedroom and rapes me. If he does not murder me, I’m now pregnant and psychologically scarred. Since I couldn’t defend myself, and I now have an unwanted pregnancy and head to an abortion clinic.

Call me crazy, but I would rather end the criminal’s life as opposed to ending an innocent life that could not help the conditions under which he or she was conceived.

US 2009 Statistics:

->1,200,000 abortions + 4,130,665 births = 5,330,665 conceptions. 1.2 million/5.3 million = .225.

->31,347 deaths by firearms. The population estimate = 305,529,237 people. 31,347/305 million = .0001. Total injury deaths = 177,154. 177,154/305 million = .0006.

You have a 22.5% chance of being killed by your mother during gestation. You have a .01% chance of being killed with a firearm. If you aren’t starting trouble, your chance of being killed with a firearm is even lower. Once you are on your own in this world, you have a .06% chance of being killed by any injury (poisoning, car accident, firearms).

Gun control advocates are about preserving life and yet they continue to demand the right to abort their unborn. They want the freedom to choose what happens with a woman's body, but they don't want to allow her to defend it.

"Rain without Thunder" It's the year 2042 and the threat is real -women are going to prison for terminating their pregnancies. Starring Betty Buckly, Jeff Daniels and Frederic Forrest.. A must see movie. Should be required for high school graduation. (Orion home video) . Gun control and reproductive health choices... never thought I'd see those in the same argument. The first is re-active, killing ‘bad’ people, and the second is pro-active- choosing to prevent pregnancy . Saw a cute post on my fb, " IF women armed themselves to protect reproductive rights, the GOP would ban guns."
