The Lewis and Clark Boat House was designed in such a way that during a flood, everything could be removed from the lower level allowing floodwater to pass through.

The Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center, built in 2003, sits along the riverfront in St. Charles. It is the permanent home of the Discovery Expedition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching and carrying on the legacy of Lewis and Clark. During the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's journey, more than 150 reenactors from this group followed the trail of Lewis and Clark dressed in period clothing, sleeping under canvas and cooking over campfires. The handcrafted replica boats, used to retrace their trail, are on display in the lower level of the Boat House. The Lewis and Clark Museum and gift shop are located on the upper level.
