St. Charles Woman Dies After May 26 Assault

The woman's ex-boyfriend was charged with a Feb. 26 domestic assault, and he is a suspect in the May 29 incident.

Linda Cerutti, of St. Charles, died Sunday as a result of injuries from a May 26 assault. She was 50 years old.

Lt. Dave Senter, of St. Charles Police, said the May 26 incident still is under investigation. No one has been charged with the attack.

However, police do have a suspect according to court documents.

St. Charles Police said in a report that Cerutti’s ex-boyfriend, Steven Martineau, is a suspect in the May 26 assault.

Martineau was charged with domestic assault after police reported that he punched Cerutti twice in the face at their shared home in the 400 block of Tower Grove Place in St. Charles Feb. 26. The police report indicated he punched her because she stayed out until the early morning hours.

The domestic assault charge on the Feb. 26 incident was filed May 31, two days after Cerutti was fatally injured.

Police said in a report that Martineau has prior arrests for domestic assault in Muskegon County, MI, where he is wanted on a probation violation.

Cerutti is survived by two grown children, three grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.

There will be a graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery at noon Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lydia's House, a shelter for abused women and their children.

Words can not express the loss we feel! This is a tragedy that never should have happened! To anyone out there dealing with an abusive situation, get out NOW! The next beating could be the last. You never know. It only takes one hit at the right place and no matter how sorry the abuser is afterwards, what done is done. Even a small slap, landed on the right spot at the right time, can be fatal. So don't fool yourself that the abuse "isn't that bad". Abuse is wrong! Have respect for yourself and demand it from others! No one deserves this. Please, if you are being abused at all, get out!
Linda Cerutti was a real person, flesh and blood. A loving, caring individual who had kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncle's and many friends! Don't think this can't happen to you because until this happened we all felt it couldn't happen to us!
SEEK VALIDATION NOT VIOLATION! RIP Linda! I love you so very much!

Steve Martineau is my step-dad. My mother was with him for over 20 years and he abused the both of us all those years. Words can't express how I feel for Linda's family and friends. I am heartbroken. I'm very lucky my mother finally got the strength to leave him or this would be her instead of Linda. I send my deepest syympathy and condolences to her family and friends. God Bless.
