‘Show-Me’ No MO? Should Missouri Get a New Slogan?
A measure by a St. Louis County Republican could officially change the state’s slogan.
The Associated Press reported Monday that a resolution from St. Louis County Republican state Sen. John Lamping cleared the Senate and won an endorsement from a committee in the house. The bill urges the Division of Tourism to incorporate a new slogan into its marketing: "The Great Rivers State."
Though it’s never been made official, Missouri is widely known as the "Show-Me" state. It's even on our license plates, although you can now get a plate with the proposed new slogan on it.
Why the "Great Rivers" State?
Lamping’s measure points out that the state boasts more than 110,000 miles of rivers and streams. Plus, the Mississippi and Missouri rivers are significantly tied to the country’s history.
Missouri Stream Team Watershed Coalition executive director Holly Neill told the St. Louis Beacon she hopes the resolution will provide more incentive for people to explore and help conserve the state’s waterways.
Why the "Show-Me" State?
According to Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s website, Missouri Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1897 to 1903, is most commonly credited with coining the phrase during an 1899 speech at a naval banquet in Philadelphia.
"I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me," Vandiver said during the speech. "I am from Missouri. You have got to show me."
What other nicknames does Missouri have?
Besides the “Show-Me” state, Missouri is already being marked with other slogans, including “The Cave State” and “Where the Rivers Run.”
The state is also known as the "Lead State," the "Bullion State," the "Ozark State," the "Iron Mountain State" and the "Pennsylvania of the West," the Beacon reported.
What do you think? Should Missouri officially become the "Great Rivers" state or just stick with the "Show-Me" state? Or, do you prefer a different name?

This sounds like change simply for the sake of change. It's a waste of our govt's time as well as our money as taxpayers. The govt. should be working on much more important matters and leave a good thing alone.

I'm with you on that Lynn. For most of my '20s I've lived in other states and the first thing people say when I tell them where I'm from is, "Oh you're from 'The Show Me.'" I think that it's a jazzy name and to change it will not improve anything.

I agree we do not need another slogan. One slogan is plenty. There are other issues in MO that need to be addressed not our slogan. I think the slogan "Show Me" offers more than "Great Rivers". With the Show Me slogan we can show you our great Rivers. The slogan we currently have offers a variety of ideas where as "Great Rivers" leaves nothing else to imagine in Missouri.

You people elect foolish little men like that polished turd of a bible thumper Sen. John Lamping and his mentally defective plan to ban contraception through insurance companies; and that includes all the ass-clowns that voted for it.
It's niegh on to the year two thousand and thirteen, not 1684. We don't burn witches anymore.
Your god is completely absent because he never existed. MO's been drinkin' the christian Koolaid for too long.
Here's a perfect slogan, " We put the MO in MORONS"
The world is starting to stand up to you pointless bastards and your self-serving rightwing/christian telebahn nonsence. Your glutoney and avarice is appauling and you heartless treatment of the poor and incapable is anything but christ like.

Never really liked the "Show me" statement. Sounds more like a challenge than an invitation. Doesn't work well when trying to promote tourism to Missouri. If a new slogan (not sure I like the new on either) could help tourism increase. That would then increase revenue in the state by bringing in those visitors. So, in effect, they would be indirectly working on employement and budget issues.

I never really like the "Show Me" either. With that on our licence plate you would think that we are inviting people to flash as they drive by.
I like the slogan "Gateway State".
It highlights that the two great rivers were the gateway to the west. And later the wagon trains all came through here. BUT, when Lincoln put the transcontinintal railroad through his homestate and Chicago, we started losing out. Also later, Chicago received the airline hubs because they had passed us in size. Maybe by emphisizing that we are the "Gateway" would call attention to the fact that we are more centrally located and we could obtain transportation hubs and cargo hubs to help our economy, and which would encourage business headquarters to move here with quality jobs.

I'm 50 and I've never met a larger group of fools that truly need to have people SHOW ME HOW DO BE A CIVILIZED PERSON!!! Why not SHOW ME how to educate your kids properly? SHOW ME why the vast majority of you should even be allowed to breed? What's truly hysterical is that you fools don't even REALIZE how clueless you are!!!!

Since " Live Free or Die" is unfortunately taken, I do think the "Great Rivers State" is a huge improvement over the smug and churlish "Show Me" slogan.

Lamping needs to "Show Me" why he thinks he should be re-elected. Stop wasting time and tax payers' money!! Balance the budget, find a way to bring more jobs to the state and improve education. "Show Me" why we should pay you!!

Governments have many responsibilities and they all rely on a number of variables. Tax revenue is generated from a countless number of areas with one being tourism. This change could increase a whole new sector of traveler and with it tourism dollars. You have other states that use the ‘State Tag Line’ to market the state why shouldn’t we. While they work on unemployment and the budget they cannot leave everything else behind. One relies on the other and must be brought forward together. Increase the state tourism by attracting outdoor adventurers with a line like “Great Rivers” and you increase the revenue that can go to schools or any other number of funding request that you all have mentioned.

That is a very solid point Bob, for example when you mention the "Sunshine State" you know exactly what state is being discussed. Do you think it would be beneficial since we've been the "Show-Me" for so long? There are a lot of areas that base tourism on rivers.

Let's just try something like a slogan located at the top of our license plates like" "Travel UP & Down our Beautiful Rivers & Streams " and the tried and true "Show -Me State" at the bottom. Additional tourism information would be satisified and our familar slogan would live on

Utter waste of time. Why fix it if it isn't broken? We have lots to "show" in the State of Missouri, not just rivers and streams, so "Show Me" works market-wise. Think "Show Me" is smug and churlish? YOU are not a Missourian! Get with it or get out.

"The Show Me State" is a unique and interesting slogan. While I love Missouri's rivers, "The Great Rivers Stae" sounds much more generic and forgettable, like it was created by a focus group. U. City just wasted money coming up with a "new" slogan and logo (really just the old logo with new colors that have nothing to do with the city and look like everyone else's) , when we should've been using that money for something more worthwhile. I hate to see our state make the same mistake my city just made.

Since St. Louis is "The Gateway to the West" with the Gateway Arch, why not have "The Gateway to America" or "The Gateway to the World" or "The Gateway State" as the new slogan for the State of Missouri.

In this digital age (since plates are now printed not stamped), my guess it would cost little to none extra to give motorists a choice of a few slogans, thereby satisfying the traditionalists while providing an extra boost to our state economy from tourism.

What a beautiful state. I hope it remains the show me state. There are many pristine rivers to float and it's the home of roots of rock n roll (chuck berry) and bebop (charlie parker) and cool jazz (miles Davis).
There are many things you could name the state. I prefer show me

Man I am sure glad our legislature has been working on these really important things. I mean man, this is much more important than smart gun control or school safety. Wow, I thought they were wasting our money. And this certainly isn't because a long time ago a democrat said this and now we have a Rep. majority. And it couldn't possibly be because somebody's buddy wants this change to help his business. Wait. Could it?
