National Wear Red Day Feb. 1

National Wear Red Day offers a reminder that women should educate themselves about heart disease being the leading cause of death for American women.

National Wear Red Day is a reminder for Americans that Heart Disease is a leading cause of death for women in the U.S. 

Cardiovascular disease kills 500,000 American women each year, according to the American Heart Association. This fact prompted the AHA to create the National Wear Red Day on Feb. 1 of each year. 

In St. Charles County, the SSM Heart Institute is sponsoring the seventh annual “Her Heart: Every Beat Counts” education and screening day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 at The Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center.

The event is open to the public and free.

Featured speakers include physicians from SSM St. Joseph Health Center, SSM St. Joseph Hospital West and SSM DePaul Health Center. Heart disease survivor Rachel D'Souza-Siebert will share her personal story. 

Presentations are on topics including: 

  • How a woman's heart is different
  • Understanding the vascular system
  • Congestive Heart Failure: What is it and how to prevent it
